Ostrov Kusova slowly grew from a shadowy blur on the distant horizon until the island ultimately loomed high over the Lovets Ryby. Fedor Rybak deftly guided his fishing boat into one of the narrow canyons that had been carved by wind and sea into the high rock cliffs that made up the south side of the small uninhabited wedge of land, the southernmost of the Shantar Islands. There was barely room for Rybak to steer between the sheer rock walls. The fjord cut into the island only a few hundred meters, but it still provided a cramped anchorage, sheltered from the wind and the sea surge. But more importantly, it also effectively shielded them in all directions from any prying eyes.

As Rybak was directing his crew in anchoring the Lovets Ryby, they were joined by another vessel that somehow knew which crevice in the rock to enter to rendezvous with the fishing boat. It was the Kilo-class submarine Yaroslavl.

Jim Ward stared from the fishing boat’s deck in amazement as the diesel submarine steamed very slowly into the small harbor. Men standing on the sub’s bridge waved, and the crew and captain of the Lovets Ryby returned the greeting warmly. Okay, where in hell had the Children of the Gulag acquired themselves a freaking submarine? And a front-line, modern Russian one to boot? You simply did not pick one of those out and order it from Amazon!

Ward was impressed. It was becoming obvious that Ivan Dostervesky and the Children of the Gulag had more reach and capability than the US—and probably the rest of the world that even knew about the secessionists—would have imagined.

The submarine moored snugly alongside the fishing boat in what little space was available to them. Refueling and stocking provisions was a well-practiced choreography for the two crews by now. Well hidden in the fjord or not, they made quick work of it. The three SEALs barely had time to bid Captain Rybak farewell and move their gear aboard the submarine. Then the Yaroslavl cast off, carefully turned about, and headed back out to the open sea. Meanwhile, the Lovets Ryby raised anchor and then slowly followed the submarine back down the short, narrow channel. They left no sign that a clandestine rendezvous had occurred in this narrow crevasse in an obscure island in a remote corner of the world.

Still, to further reduce the chance of observation, after clearing the mouth of the fjord, the Yaroslavl immediately dove and carefully matched the contour of the sloping bottom out to deeper water. Then, Mark Lodkamatros, the submarine’s rebel captain, and his brother, Igor, joined the SEALs in the submarine’s compact wardroom. There had been no opportunity for introductions or a welcome in the frenzy of the transfer of materials in the anchorage.

The big man genially held out his hand and said in heavily accented English, “Komandir Ward, welcome aboard the Deti Gulaga submarine Yaroslavl. Let me introduce myself and my brother. I am Mark Lodkamatros, and this is Igor.”

Igor, a younger, slightly smaller version of his brother, nodded and almost smiled.
